In short
For the IKK classic health insurance card you need a recent, frontal photo with your face clearly visible against a neutral background. A biometric passport photo is not required. IKK classic sends you to its photo service provider via “Zum Bild-Upload”. In the online photo portal you upload the photo or take it with a webcam or smartphone; you sign in with the access details IKK classic sent you by post.

Photo requirements
What IKK classic itself says:
- Whole face clearly recognisable, at least 2 cm high
- 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high without border
- Light background without colour cast, clear contrast to face and hair
- Looking into the camera, eyes open and fully visible, neutral expression
- No other people or objects in the picture
- Religious head covering allowed if the whole face is visible; not required to be biometric
Photo rejected – what now?
If your photo is rejected, IKK classic usually tells you why. Common reasons are shadows, a busy background, a tilted head or a face that is too small.
- Take a new photo in daylight from the front, head straight
- Face large enough in the frame (about 70–80% of the image height)
- Have the background replaced – FotoKlar does this automatically
- If the insurer rejects the purchased photo for not meeting its requirements, we refund the €7.99 in full
