In short
A photo on a German CV is optional; because of the General Equal Treatment Act (AGG) many employers do not ask for one. If you include it, place it at the top right of the first CV page or on a cover sheet, in portrait format around 4 × 5 to 5 × 6.5 cm. A friendly, professional portrait works better than a biometric passport photo.

Is a photo on the CV required?
No. The photo is voluntary; employers judge your application without it.
The AGG protects applicants against discrimination, which is why many employers no longer expect a photo. In many industries it is still common and can make your application more personal.
Size and placement
- Top right on the first CV page, next to your contact details
- Or larger on a cover sheet
- Portrait format, around 4 × 5 to 5 × 6.5 cm on the page – the 4:5 ratio fits
- For PDFs: high resolution (FotoKlar delivers 1200 × 1500 px) so it stays sharp
What makes a good CV photo?
- Friendly and natural – a slight smile is welcome, unlike on passport photos
- Clothing that suits the job you are applying for
- Calm background: studio grey, blue-grey, warm or white
- Recent: the photo should look like you at the interview
LinkedIn profile picture: use the same photo?
Profiles crop to a square or circle – use the 1:1 version with space around the head.
FotoKlar delivers both: portrait 4:5 for the CV and square 1:1 for LinkedIn, Xing and portals, for €7.99.
